Kenneth C. Whitney Family Newsletter
The Desert Bloom
May 2001
First Edition

Welcome to the first Kenneth C. Whitney Family Newsletter. While the response seems a bit sparse, I know that news is not, and since everyone loves news, I'll do my best to relay what I've heard!

Chris & Summer still enjoy living in northern Nevada, especially with the onset of warmer weather. We keep waiting for the announcement that they are moving back to Moapa Valley, but it just hasn't come yet. Chris keeps busy with trucking jobs at the mine, while Summer keeps busy listening to Leslie extensive and ever-augmenting vocabulary. Summer has a new church calling as chorister in the Primary (or was that Martha?). It sounds like tons of fun singing all those cute little songs to those sweet Primary children. I'll bet she never ceases to wow them all with her creative props and presentations. Chris and Summer have been scoping out their locality for a reunion site for us this summer. Apparently their home owners association has its own camping area, which may be just what we need. We plan to hold a reunion some time in July. Stay tuned for more information as to date and place.

Melanie and her kids packed up the car and drove to Salem, Utah last week. Andy will be flying down to meet them for his brother's missionary home coming next week. Apparently it was quite the surprise for the Atwood grandparents when they arrived unannounced. We look forward to them arriving here soon. Hopefully they can join my class for our annual outing to Wet and Wild on May 25th.

I can tell Rebecca keeps busy since she hardly has time to call us anymore. She's still jamming with Harp Fusion and stressing over classes. Last we heard she's adding education to her degree and planning to graduate in about two years. Harp Fusion has a gig coming up in September somewhere in Malaysia, (remember the movie Entrapment?) so Becca and her fellow musicians are furiously fundraising to make the deadline. She also mentioned something about ring shopping and setting dates for this summer, but we're waiting for a more definite confirmation before announcing anything!

McKay & Matt played an exciting gig at Disneyworld, Florida last month. They performed at a fancy restaurant where the whole stage rose up from the lower floor, like an elevator. They also enjoyed a personal tour of the secret underground tunnel system restricted to employees only. McKay winds down his senior year with an award luncheon at the KLVX Television station in Las Vegas. He also has a senior trip to California, M Week including a day at Warm Springs, and senior day at Wet & Wild. He decided to make UNLV his choice for next year, and now just needs to figure out his classes. Monday the Jazz Band plays their final concert with a special solo by McKay, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. His graduation is June 8th.

Matt has nothing to say. He continues as his same awesome self, still straight A's, still everyone's favorite person. He spends much time helping Dad and Grandpa with yard work, tractor work, and whatever else comes along, not to mention his mom with this newsletter.

Mom & Dad are counting down the days till the end of school. Dad's waiting for the school to figure out their schedule so he can put the poor kids into their classes. Mom is wrapping up Taming of the Shrew, her favorite part of the school year. She's looking for volunteers to accompany her to The Tempest & Julius Caesar this summer in Cedar City. We miss everyone and look forward to seeing you whenever we can.

Love, Mom & Dad

Jeremy and Martha's News

All is well for Jeremy and me in California. It seems like the month of April was spent getting ready for May. We also both had spring break on the same week and had a great time. Nevertheless, I'm excited May is beginning. The week before Spring Break, Chris called us and told us that some weird people called and invited them over for Easter Dinner. Chris and Summer told them know because they already had plans with his sister and her husband. So that evening, Chris called and invited us over for Easter. We left Saturday and enjoyed 3 fun filled days with them. Leslie is still as cute as ever. We went snow tubing one day and Leslie went farther and faster than any of us -- that girl has know fear! We had a picnic flew kites, looked for deer, toured the booming town of Elko, and relaxed and visited (well, we all relaxed except Leslie, she was always in motion). We left early Wednesday morning and headed back home to California.

On the way home we took a detour to Virginia City. I remembered going there in FHA and wanted to relive some of the good memories with Jeremy. We toured a mine that was part of the Comstock Lode and looked at all the cool shops. We thought a lot about Mom in the Mark Twain shop. The rest of spring break was spent relaxing at home. I played our new piano till my hearts content (our poor upstairs neighbors) and scrapbooked and also prepared for my new calling. My singing group has changed from adults to children as I was called as the primary chorister. Last week was my first week and I guess it went ok. The sunbeams are my favorite group of kids.

Jeremy's schooling is going well. He is either studying or attending class or practicing the piano (he's my first piano student on our new piano). It's fun to hear him practice away at the circle of fifths and Ode to Joy.

This first weekend our first spring marching band review. The next four weekends are band reviews with the spring concert in the middle of it all. We are featuring a guest artist: a professional harpist flying in from Arizona for our concert. The kids are really excited for Becca to come! Last time I was telling the class about her, a few of the 8th grade boys expressed their interest in Becca. I told them they better wait until they graduate from middle school to begin their moves. The concert is May 9th at 7:00 P.M. at Cruickshank Middle School. You all are invited.

Take care and I hope everyone is doing well.
Love, Martha and Jeremy
